Aeschynanthus ‘Rong Yao’, 2023, IR231876, hybridized by Xirong Zheng, Ying Chen, Xing Hu; Guangzhou Institute of Forestry and Landscape Architecture; Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. (A. pulcher (Blume) G. Don x A. tricolor Hook). Cross made 04.15.2021, seeds planted 07.02.2021, first flowering 11.14.2022. Fertile, reproducible only vegetatively. Trailing habit, stem length over 50 cm. Leaves moderate olive green adaxially; greyish yellow green abaxially, 2-3.5 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, ca. 0.5 cm petiole, elliptic with acuminate tip, cuneate base, entire margin, hairy. Calyx fused, dark red, 20-25 mm. Length of the pedicel 1-2.5 cm, 2 flowers per axil. Corolla hooded, ca. 6 cm long, 0.6-1.0 cm wide, vivid red with several dark red stripes outside, yellow inside. Trailing habit of this cultivar makes it suitable for tall containers or hanging baskets. Grows best in shady conditions.
