Primulina (Chirita) ‘Silver Surfer’

Primulina ‘Silver Surfer’. 2000, IR00731, John Boggan, DC. (P. dryas (C. sinensis) ‘Hisako’ x P. longgangensis). Cross made summer 1996, planted Nov. 1996, and first bloomed Aug. 1998. Sterile and reproducible only vegetatively. Stemless rosette with leaves in whorls of three, usually less than 10 in. in diam­eter. Leaves smooth with short hairs, 5 in. long x 1 to 1 ½ in. wide, with indistinct petiole, linear to elliptic with slightly crenate margin, acute tip and decurrent base. Calyx split, green, ¼ in. long. Peduncle 4 in. tall with 6-10 flow­ers per leaf axil. Corolla salverform, 1 ¾ in. long, tube medium purple with darker veins, lobes darker purple with darker veins. Combines the silver­marked leaves of ‘Hisako’ with the compact, floriferous habit of P. longgangensis. First published 1999, CrossWords 23 (2) 5-6.
