Smithiantha ‘Red King’

Smithiantha ‘Red King’ .1997, IR975l5, M. Cass, PA. (‘Maggie’ x ‘Halloween’). Cross made 1992, planted in 1993 and first bloomed in 1994. Reproducible only from vegetative cuttings. Medium sized erect plant with tendency to form multiple crowns. Leaves dark green covered with red hairs giving a red-brown appearance, ovate, with acute tip and crenate edges, 11 cm long, 12 cm wide with 5 cm petiole. Calyx split and green. Corolla salverform, 2.75 cm long, 2.54 cm in diameter. Top of exterior corolla red (Union Jack 46B), bottom of corolla and interior of tube mottled yellow and red with red spots (Currant Red 46A) on lobes and inside tube. Usually an extra petal appears on each side of the tube. Plant material has been distributed to Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses and Belisle’s Violet House.
