2016 Convention – Trips

Gesneriads in the First State
July 5 to July 9, 2016

Monday, July 4 Longwood Gardens with little-known insights from an insider –Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great gardens,  a living expression of all that its founder, Pierre S.  du Pont, found inspiring, meaningful, and beautiful. From the intricate fountain systems to the meticulous gardens to the architectural grandeur, awe-inspiring discoveries await at every turn. Our full-day visit will be enhanced by a commentary from the Society’s own Elizabeth Varley.  A former long-time Longwood employee who served as their gesneriad curator, Elizabeth will share her considerable expertise during the first part of the visit. After that you will be on your own to visit  the  gardens,  the greenhouses,  the lily  pond,  and  the cafeteria  or dining room.  Lunch is on your own.

Tuesday, July 5 Winterthur: a Garden to Remember – With its magnificent specimen plantings and massed displays of color, many deem Winterthur to be among the best gardens in the world. This 60-acre naturalistic garden was founded and designed by another du Pont, Henry Francis. Included in our half-day visits (optional morning or afternoon, as available) are access to the garden, a garden tram tour, the galleries and special exhibitions, and an introductory house tour. If you wish to view the entire house, you can purchase a ticket upon arrival. There is a cafeteria, should you choose to grab a quick bite at the gardens.

Saturday Night Dinner, July 9 – a Hoarder, Mystery Plants, and Dessert from a Nationally Recognized Chef – Dinner at Timothy’s Riverfront Grille will conclude our memorable week, along with some added surprises. After dinner, Jim Roberts will educate and entertain as he shares his exploits in trying to grow it all. He’s promised some great pictures. Additionally, Quentin Schlieder is madly propagating mystery plants provided by Dale Martens so no one will go home empty-handed. And the icing on the cake – dessert will be provided by Chef Dana.
